There is one thing I’ll never have to worry about with Byron and that’s whether he’ll be a good reader. See, he is a good reader already. No, he is actually a great reader; reading well beyond his age bracket. I’m not sure why; I mean we never pushed reading or anything. Sure he has a heap of books around him, and yes we read to him when he was little, but nothing out of the ordinary or spectacular. He just likes to read. I’m inclined to believe it must be a natural ability for him. He’s always been adept in the way he communicates, even as a 12 month old. He communicated with such ease, as though the English language was second nature to him.
At the insistence of his teacher, who indicated Byron would enjoy it, she suggested we purchase him a children’s dictionary. I searched around for the perfect one, and I found it. It had a good combination of words to pictures (not too many pictures but still enough remembering he’s 6). For the first few nights after we gave it to him, he slept with it (no doubt he’ll kill me for revealing that). He insisted we write out big lists of words so that he could go and find them. So long as it was included within the dictionary he would be able to locate it. He is a sponge for knowledge…always searching for new and exciting facts.
Sometimes, it will be way past his bedtime of 7:00pm and he’ll still be reading by the light shining in from the laundry. There are always books in his bed. It’s his favourite time to read. During the day, he would much prefer to kick a ball than to read, but the moment he hops into his bed, there has to be a book at the ready. Tonight it was a documentary book on animals he picked out at SeaWorld. Of course he would be the child to pick out the book when given the option to pick anything he wanted (under $10 of course).
No doubt, I’ll be hearing all about crocodile facts tomorrow.
