The last 12 months have been such an amazing time for me on my photographic journey. From the Canon advertising campaign, to awards at state and national level, to just the general pleasure of photographing new people, big and small, every week. With every new client I photograph and every award I win, I wonder how I came to be in the spot I am right now. This was reinforced again when I headed down to Sydney on Tuesday for the opening of the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize 2011 and what would be one of the most surreal experiences in my career to date.
Over 200,000 photographers and artists submitted entries into the Moran Prize for 2011 – which work should symbolise Contemporary Australian Life. Those numbers are huge and it’s no wonder when its not only the richest contemporary art prize in Australia, but the world. When I entered I never dared dream I would make it as a finalist let alone a Highly Commended. So when I received a phone call telling me I was a finalist I just about fell off my chair with excitement. Being a finalist, in amongst some AMAZING artists was simply mind blowing for me. I let it rest, and didn’t give consideration to winning anything – seriously I didn’t think I stood any sort of chance. Last week, I received a phone call wanting to confirm whether I was going to attend the opening of the exhibition. Being in Sydney I hadn’t really given it any consideration – although I would have loved to attend (who wouldn’t) I wasn’t sure I could make it happen. After some persuasion I decided I should go.
At the media announcement I was beside myself with nerves, like horrible nerves, so much so I just couldn’t think straight. Therefore, I couldn’t really hear what was being said. I *thought* I heard my name in amongst the discussion but I couldn’t be sure – and had to ask someone to confirm who the award winners were. I was completely and utterly bowled over to hear my name as one of the Highly Commended artists in this years Prize. Being at the exhibition and seeing my work displayed is too exciting and humbling for words really. The talent on show at the NSW State Library is unbelievable and if you happen to be in Sydney, do check it out (until 25 June).
It was such a wonderful highlight in my career to date and I loved sharing the experience with Trevor and my brother, Nathan. We had a wonderful night and I hope to do it again sometime in the next few years (one can hope of course…!).
