This photo a day challenge, is where I embark on the epic, personal journey to take one photograph every day for the month of January, of the things that are important to me.
This little boy was five years old when I started my photo a day projects. Four years on and he’s now nine. Nine. Yes I did write nine.
Once upon a time, aka last year, I was sad at the thought of him or any of my children growing up. I can’t for the life of me pin point exactly what it is that I was really sad or scared about. Perhaps the thought they would loose their cuteness, that comes with being six and under. Perhaps it was just the innocence they harboured that I wanted to keep close. Or maybe I just liked having really little people in the house. Who knows? The fact is, I was scared of them growing up and morphing into un-cute, no need for me, tweenies.
However, this past year, what I’ve learned is that it’s cool to watch them grow. It’s cool to watch them embark on new and exciting journeys, even if that is playing on the street unsupervised, with a creek near by. I’ve learned that they are super special and caring and still as darn cute as ever.
I tell you going on bike rides with my boy – just him and I – is so much better than wiping a toddler’s behind. Conversations are so much cooler than cleaning up splatter food all over the ground. Don’t get me wrong, I still miss that baby and toddler age, and I always will. That’s just the ‘mother’ in me. But I’m embracing this new adventure in my life. I’ve never been the mother of a child on the verge of the tween years. I know babies, toddlers and preschoolers all too well and I love all those ages have to offer, but this – this is wonderful beyond words.
I can’t wait to walk and venture more with my boy this coming year. I can’t wait to play more Lego, watch movies and chat about stuff he finds interesting.
I simply can’t wait.
